Game of Thrones Fantasy Coins
There is no denying the popularity of the HBO series Game of Thrones. Officially licensed, these fantasy coins based on that series were created and are manufactured by our good friend Tom Maringer. Among Tom's talents is that he is an extraordinary sword maker. Designing and making these coins is really a continuance of the inspiration Tom found in his sword making.
A fantasy coin is made in four basic stages. The first is the design, which is drawn on a piece of paper. The artist often researches ancient and medieval coins for engraving styles and subjects for his coins. Working from the 2D design, a reverse image of each side of the coin is engraved in pieces of steel and then the steel is hardened. These dies are used to stamp, or strike, the image into a blank of a softer metal like brass, copper or silver. Finishing is the final step. The stamped coins can be finished with a pristine surface or to look like they are old. Because of the handwork on these coins, no two are ever exactly the same.
These three sets of coins are made of brass and copper. There are four coins in each set of the House of Stark and the House of Targaryen. The Half-Dragons Eight Piece collector set in brass represents every house in fictional Westeros. Each set ships in a waxed sealed clear plastic envelope with a printed card with information about each set.
