about this product

Product Details

In the early 19th Century, scientists were exploring concepts of light and optics. Devices known as philosophical toys became a form of amusement. From this, Dr. David Brewster, a Scottish physicist, patented the kaleidoscope in 1817. He was the first to arrange mirrors and objects in a tube. There have been many more advancements over the last two hundred years. In 1985, after an exhibition in Maryland of more than 100 kaleidoscopes, the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society was established. With well over 100 artists that are contributing members, there has been a resurgence in the collectability of this unique art form.

Each kaleidoscope is handmade in Israel using polished brass, high-grade optical mirrors, natural stones, and colored crystal glass beads, all suspended in oil. The classic model (measures 6-1/4" long) comes with a brass stand while the T-shaped model (barrel measures 4-1/4" long and the clear cylinder measures 6-1/4" long) sits on a wooden stand. Each provides spectacular imagery with every movement.
