Rustic Cedar Fish
These one-of-a-kind fish begin life as a Western Red Cedar fence post. Homesteaders along the Rocky Mountains staked out new land by planting juniper (cedar) posts around their property and stringing barbed wire, thus ending the era of free-range cattle and sheep. Being naturally insect and weather resistant, even after over 100 years, many of these posts survive today. Most are being replaced with steel posts.
Each hand carved fish is unique with colors ranging from a deep red to a honey gold and all hues in between. Cut from the cedar post, shaped, smoothed and finally finished with six coats of hand finishing, with some of the post left "as-is", often revealing the fence staples that are still in place. From reclaimed, century-old fence posts to unique works of art. The small fish measures 12"-14" and weighs approximately 10.2 oz. The medium fish measures 14"-16" and weighs about 1 lb. They are keepers! Drilled holes on the back for easy hanging. Signed on the bottom by the artist. Hand carved in the U.S.A.
